Where to stay

El Palo: family-friendly beach life on the edge of Málaga

by Casa Ivy Group

Traditional wooden jábega fishing boat resting on the sand of El Palo beach in Málaga
El Palo — Málaga's old fishing quarter, still full of jábegas and chiringuitos.

El Palo is the old fishing village on the eastern edge of Málaga — chiringuitos lined up along the sand, families on bikes along the promenade, and the smell of espetos (sardines on a stick) drifting up the street.

Why stay here

  • Espetos and paella at your doorstep — this is the original chiringuito coast. El Tintero, Gutiérrez Playa, El Cabra and dozens of family-run beach restaurants are walkable.
  • A long, calm sandy beach away from the cruise-port crowds.
  • The seafront promenade runs all the way back to the centre — beautiful walks, runs and bike rides.
  • A genuine village feel: small shops, neighbourhood bars, kids on the beach until sunset.

Who it suits

Families, returning visitors, and travellers who want sea air, slow mornings and seafood lunches more than museums and nightlife.

Good to know

  • 15 minutes by taxi (or the EMT bus) into the historic centre — easy in and out.
  • Quieter at night — perfect if you want to actually sleep.
  • Beach is open year-round; espetos season peaks May–October but never really stops.

Casa Ivy in El Palo is an independent duplex house, second line from the sea, with a sandy beach just behind. Sea breeze and slow Málaga at its best.
